Four fun pieces for two violins
Youth work |

|
Premiered October 14th, 2005 at a Faculty Series concert In Celebration of the 110Th Aniversary of the UW-Madison-School of Music. Premiered by virtuoso Manuel Guillén.
Perennial Spirit is a 10-minute violin solo piece, dedicated to the Spanish virtuoso Manuel Guillén.The form is simple: an initial part with an improvisatory-like character in which an ancient atmospheric line supported by double stops evokes a primitive chant searching for freedom in its short development , which remains grounded by an ostinato note. This prelude is followed by a fugue that, although resembling the manner of the old late 17 th century, nevertheless is quite unorthodox due to t its politonality and the way it breaks into the ad libitum cadenza before the end of the composition.
The philosophical idea that generates the musical language is based uppon one of the perennial ideas of philosophy: The idea that nature and spirit exist as two sides of the same whole. The violin (nature) plays a solo within the natural realm -tonal system and instrumental limitations . This extremely difficult violin solo challenges the virtuoso violininst (spirit) to solve hundreds of complex technical situations in orther to express a simple musical idea, like and extemporaneous game for the audience with whom the player interacts, his instrument allowing the audience to witness the reality of this phenomenon. This facts is common to all artistic manifestations and this piece is created for the humble celebration of this miraculous event.
